Laura Walker, M.A.

Academic Background and Information:

I am currently a second year doctoral student in the Ph.D. program in counseling psychology. My ultimate career goal is to become a practicing psychologist at a VA hospital. I am currently beginning a practicum at the Marion VA hospital. In terms of research, I am interested in mental health issues pertaining to veterans, including PTSD, TBI, substance abuse, and health psychology. I am currently researching attitudes toward seeking psychological help among veterans; I hope that this will help me to understand the factors that affect veterans' decisions to seek help and to improve mental health service utilization among veterans. I am interested in development during adulthood and especially among older adults. I am also interested in sociocultural perspectives on development. I view the military as a culture, and I am interested in how joining that culture as an adult or growing up within that culture (e.g., as a military brat) shapes development.

Personal Information:

I am originally from Florida and did my undergraduate work at the University of West Florida and the University of Minnesota. When I am not studying, I enjoy spending time with my beloved husband, Carleton, and our two Shih Tzus, the Bunting and H. L. Mencken. When I have spare time, I enjoy reading, playing the violin and piano, science fiction, photography, Bollywood dancing, baking, and traveling.
